About Us

SciLactis Ltd is an independent research and consulting company based at the Waikato Innovation Park on the outskirts of Hamilton, New Zealand. Its Founding Director is Dr Kerst Stelwagen. Kerst hails from The Netherlands where he was raised on a dairy farm. Following his undergraduate studies in Animal Husbandry and Agricultural Economics in The Netherlands he subsequently completed an MSc in Ruminant Nutrition and a PhD in Lactation Physiology at the University of Guelph in Canada. He then moved to New Zealand where he worked as a dairy scientist at the Dairying Research Corporation (now DairyNZ Ltd) and later at AgResearch Ltd.

Dr Stelwagen has a good practical knowledge of dairy sectors in New Zealand and overseas, as well as a strong research background, with more than 200 science publications in peer-reviewed international journals, books, proceedings and conference abstracts, as well as popular press articles and is currently a Senior Editor for the  Journal of Dairy Science.

In the past he has built strong and large research programmes in areas such as mammary functional genomics and physiology and milk-derived bioactives, and has also formed strong R&D relationships with dairy processing and value-added food companies.
